This paper concerns several genaeralizations of the notion of lifting of modules over a unital ring. A module $M$ is \textit{lifting} if for all submodules $N,\ M$ has a decomposition $D\oplus D'$ such that $D\subseteq N$ and $D'\cap N$ is small in $M$; and \textit{principally lifting} if this property holds for all cyclic submodules $N$. The main generalization is that $M$ is \textit{$\mathcal{G}^*$-(principally) lifting} if for all (cyclic) submodules $N,\ M$ has a decomposition $D\oplus D'$ such that $(N+D)/N$ is small in $M/N$ and $(N+D)/D$ is small in $M/D$. The authors find several module-theoretic conditions equivalent to (principally) ($\mathcal{G}^*$)-lifting.
