The present paper develops and presents a framework to generate time adaptive variational and geometric integration schemes for Lagrangian systems in the form kinetic minus potential energy. The method starts by first unfolding the standard Euler-Lagrange system to its space-time manifold and recasting it as a geodesic problem without any potential energy part. The sense in which this scheme is symplectic and energy preserving is illustrated and very interesting simulation results are presented.
