The paper contains results from the author's dissertation ``Existence and number of global solutions to the model nonlinear partial differential equations'' [PhD thesis, University of Cincinnati, USA (2005)]. The investigation of the global existence of the solution for the Cauchy problem is restricted here to the Gellerstedt-type equations. One obtains decay estimates for the solution of the linear Gellerstedt equation in Sobolev and Besov spaces, followed by the study of the local solvability of the Cauchy problem. The results of Glassey are extended to the integral equation associated with the Cauchy problem. A special necessary condition for the existence of self-similar solutions for the semilinear Gellerstedt-type equations is shown.
