The author shows that constructions in group cohomology presented by \textit{K. W. Gruenberg} [Cohomological topics in group theory. Lect. Notes Math. 143 (1970; Zbl 0205.32701)] can be copied in the context of categories. Then, five-term sequences and the Schur multiplier in the cohomology of categories have been established and some properties examined.
