The authors present a necessary condition for the solvability of the one-dimensional autonomous Lagrange problem. The goal of the paper is to derive a DuBois-Raymond type, necessary condition for the existence of solutions of the minimization problem without any assumption of smoothness, convexity or coercivity on the Lagrangian. Based on the necessary condition some non-existence results for the autonomous variational problem are also presented. Throughout the article is well written and largely self-contained.
