Let \(E, F\) be two Banach spaces and \(B(E,F)\) be the set of bounded linear operators from \(E\) to \(F\). In the paper under review the author proves that certain subsets \(\Sigma\subset B(E,F)\) are smooth Banach submanifolds in \(B(E,F)\). Let \(\Phi(E,F)\), \(S\Phi(E,F)\) and \(R(E,F)\) be the sets of Fredholm, semi-Fredholm and finite rank operators from E into F, respectively. Let \(\Sigma\) be any of the following sets: \(\{ T\in \Phi(E,F): \text{Index}\, T= \text{const}\) and \(\dim N(T)=\text{const}\}\), \(\{ T\in S\Phi(E,F)\): either \(\dim H(T)=\text{const}<\infty\) or \(\operatorname{codim} R(T)=\text{const}<\infty\}\), \(\{ T\in R(E,F): \text{Rank}\, T=\text{const}\}\). The main theorem of the paper states that \(\Sigma\) is a smooth submanifold of \(B(E,F)\) with the tangent space \(T_A\Sigma=\{ B\in B(E,F): B(N(A))\subset r(A)\}\) for any \(A\in\Sigma\).
