The continuous time Weiss conjecture states that an observation operator is admissible for a strongly continuous semigroup if and only if a certain resolvent condition holds. In this paper, a related discrete time version of the Weiss conjecture is presented and proved for contraction semigroups. The proof is based on the Wold decomposition and the Sz.Nagy--Foias model for completely non-unitary contractions. The relation to Carleson embeddings and weighted composition operators are studied as well. Finally, it is shown that the discrete time Weiss conjecture is equivalent to the continuous time Weiss conjecture for scalar valued observation operators.
