Let \(G\) be a compact Abelian group and let \((\chi_n)_{n=1}^\infty\) be a sequence in the dual \(\widehat G\). Subgroups of \(G\) defined by \(S_{(\chi_n)_{n=1}^\infty}(G):=\{\alpha\in G: \lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\chi_n(\alpha)=0\}\) are called basic \(\mathbf g\)-closed subgroups. A subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) is said to be \(\mathbf g\)-closed if it is representable as the intersection of basic \(\mathbf g\)-closed subgroups. The authors show that every countable subgroup of a compact Abelian group \(G\) is basic \(\mathbf g\)-closed iff \(G\) is metrizable. This solves Problem 5.3 from [\textit{D. Dikranjan, C. Milan} and \textit{A. Tonolo}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 197, No. 1--3, 23--41 (2005; Zbl 1065.22003)]. Next, the authors show that every countable subgroup \(H\) of a compact Abelian group \(G\) is \(\mathbf g\)-closed. This solves Problem 5.1 and Question 5.2 of the same paper. Both results were independently proved in [\textit{D. Dikranjan} and \textit{K. Kunen}, Characterizing subgroups of compact Abelian groups, Preprint (2004)].
