The author proves a characterisation of what is known as two-weight trace inequalities for positive dyadic operators in classical Fourier analysis. This characterisation, in the `upper triangle' case \(1<q<p<\infty\), is in terms of discrete Wolff potentials. The main ingredients in the proof are a basic lemma due to \textit{C. Cascante} et al. [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 53, No. 3, 845--882 (2004; Zbl 1077.31007)] and arguments due to Hytönen using `parallel corona' decomposition in his work on the \(A_2\)-theorem.
