Let \(D\) be a bounded domain in the plane whose boundary consists of finitely many pairwise disjoint simply closed curves and let be \(A(D)\) the algebra of all continuous functions on \(\overline{D} \) which are holomorphic on \(D\). The author proves the following Theorem: A continuous function \(f\) on \(\partial D\) extends to a function in \(A(D)\) if and only if for each \(g \in A(D)\) such that \(f + g \not= 0\) on \(\partial D\), the change of argument of \(f+g\) along \(\partial D\) is nonnegative. The necessary condition of the theorem is a consequence of the argument principle. The proof of the sufficient condition based essential on the continuity of the numbers which make the harmonic conjugate function single-valued.
