The notion of \(RS\)-set defined by \textit{D. Amir} [J. Approximation Theory 40, 196--201 (1984; Zbl 0533.41016)] in a real Banach space is extended for complex Banach spaces and the problem of best approximation from a complex \(RS\)-set is investigated. Using the subdifferential and directional derivatives of real functions defined on \(\mathbb{C}\), the author obtains characterization results for the best approximation elements from a complex \(RS\)-set (Th. 3.1). Strict convexity of the sets of coefficients in the definition of complex \(RS\)-sets is used to obtain uniqueness of the best approximation element (Th. 4.2). Also, a geometric condition is given in order that each element should have a strongly unique best approximation of order \(r\geq2\) in a complex \(RS\)-set.
