In dimensions \(n=4,5\), and \(6\), the authors characterize, up to equivariant equivalence, smooth effective actions by \((n-2)\)-dimensional tori on compact, simply connected \(n\)-manifolds which admit a Riemannian metric of non-negative curvature with an isometry group of maximal rank. As a corollary, they obtain a similar characterization of effective isometric circle actions on compact, non-negatively curved, simply connected 4-manifolds, since such actions extend to effective \(T^2\) actions.
