Let M be an n-dimensional manifold and \(\Omega\) a given volume in M. Let \(D\subseteq M\) be a submanifold having dimension n with boundary \(\partial D\subseteq M\). The authors study the variational principles in the bundle of embeddings of D in M, i.e., \(P=\{\eta: D\to M:\eta\) is an embedding\(\}\). By considering arbitrary variations, the result can be applied to free boundary problems and flow of Hamiltonian vector fields in non-compact regions.
