Let B(G) be the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact group G. The norm on B(G) (as the dual space of the universal \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*(G)\), as introduced by Eymard) can also be obtained considering B(G) as a Banach subalgebra of \({\mathcal D}(C^*(G))\), the Banach algebra of completely bounded maps of \(C^*(G)\) into itself equipped with the completely bounded norm [see the author, Math. Scand. 58, 77-104 (1986; Zbl 0607.22004)]. This clearly written interesting paper demonstrates, that this approach leads to a duality theory for finite (or more generally, discrete) groups. Let \(G=\{g_ 1,g_ 2,...,g_ n\}\), \(\Gamma_ n\) the principal transitive groupoid on n-elements (n\(\times n\)-matrix units). Then one obtains a natural Fourier algebra \(A(\Gamma_ n)\). Using a result of Haagerup it is shown that a local Cayley representation, \(A(G)\to A(\Gamma_ n)\), \(f\to f_{ij}\), \(f_{ij}=f(g^{-1},g_ j)\) is an isometric isomorphism strictly into for \(n>1\). In an analogous way one can characterize \(B(\Gamma_{\infty})\) (in the infinite discrete case) by completely bounded maps.
