The authors study and apply a metrical approach to Sobolev spaces, Newtonian spaces for the real-valued case, which arise in various evolution partial differential equations. Functions from those spaces are defined on an interval and take values in a nested family of Banach spaces. In this case, the authors adapt the definition of Newtonian spaces. For a monotone family, the authors show the existence of weak derivative, obtain an isomorphism to the standard Sobolev space, and provide some scalar characteristics. In the last section, they discuss a possible scalar characterization of the introduced spaces. In particular, they make use of the approach by \textit{Yu. G. Reshetnyak} [Sib. Math. J. 38, No. 3, 567--583 (1997; Zbl 0944.46024); translation from Sib. Mat. Zh. 38, No. 3, 657--675 (1997)], which has demonstrated its efficiency for functions valued in a metric space.
