Assuming a general form of the Riemann hypothesis for Artin L-series, the authors study the average value of the number of divisors of the prime indexed Fourier coefficients of a non-CM type normalized Hecke cuspidal eigenform of weight at least 2 over congruence modular subgroups. They obtain both upper and lower bounds for the average value, which are multiplicatied by a power of a logarithmic factor depending only on the eigenform. The authors' method uses the work of \textit{J. B. Friedlander} and \textit{H. Iwaniec} [J. Math. Sci., New York 137, No. 2, 4739--4743 (2006); translation from Zap. Nauchn. Semin. POMI 322, 212--219 (2005; Zbl 1088.11069)] on short sums over the divisor function and Rankin's trick. In the case when the weight is 2, their results are unconditional by certain bounds on the occurrence of super-singular primes due to \textit{N. Elkies} [Supersingular primes of a given elliptic curve over a number field. Cambridge: Harvard University (Ph.D. Thesis) (1989)] which serves as a replacement for the general form of the Riemann hypothesis.
