Minimal projections play an important role in numerical analysis and functional analysis. The aim of this paper is to examine the connection between the Chalmers-Metcalf operator [\textit{B. L. Chalmers} and \textit{F. T. Metcalf}, J. Oper. Theory 32, 31--46 (1994; Zbl 0827.41016)] and the uniqueness of minimal projections. The main result relates the uniqueness of minimal projections to the invertibility of the Chalmers-Metcalf operator. Several examples are provided; one of them shows that for a given minimal projection (even unique) it is possible to find many different Chalmers-Metcalf operators, some of them invertible, some not invertible. It is proved that minimal projections onto symmetric subspaces in smooth Banach spaces are unique. This leads to the solution of the uniqueness problem for the classical Rademacher projections.
