    Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be two \(C^1\) manifolds with \(\dim X=m\) and \(\dim Y=n\). Let \(Z\) be a \(C^1\) submanifold of the product \(X\times Y\) with \(\text{codim} Z= \ell<\inf (m,n)\). We assume that the restrictions to \(Z\) of the two canonical projections associated with the product \(X\times Y\) are submersions, they are denoted by \(p_1\) and \(p_2\) as follows: \[ Z @>p_1>> X;\quad Z @>p_2>> Y. \] Let \(\kappa\in C_c^0 (|\Lambda TZ|)\) be a compactly supported continuous density on \(Z\). We denote \(\mu=p_1*\kappa\), the push-forward of \(\kappa\) under \(p_1\). To the double submersion (1) is associated the generalized Radon transform \[ K:C^0(Y)\to C^0(X),\quad f\mapsto g \] such that \[ p_1*\bigl( (p^*_2f) \kappa \bigr)=g\mu. \] The authors give a geometric criterion on the double fibration (1) which is equivalent to the compactness of the operator \(K\) in any \(L^p\) space, \(1<p<+\infty\).
