This paper gives a characterization of symmetric tube domains by its Cayley transform images. The main theorem proved here is: ``Let \(\Omega + iV \) be an irreducible homogeneous tube domain and suppose a vector \(s>0\) . Then the following are equivalent : (A) Both \(C_s (\Omega + iV)\) and \(C_s^\ast (\Omega^\ast + iV)\) are convex. (B) The parameter \(s\) is a positive number multiple of \(d\), and \(\Omega + iV\) is symmetric.'' This means a homogeneous tube domain is symmetric if and only if both its Cayley transform image and the dual Cayley transform image of the dual tube domain are convex, and for symmetric tube domains the parameters of these Cayley transforms reduce to the special ones, thus they are essentially the usual Cayley transforms defined in terms of the Jordan algebra structure.
