A complicated size-structured model for populations with time variable instar stages determined by a weight gain threshold condition (due to R. Nisbet and W. Gurney) is reformulated by the author and then rigorously shown to be equivalent to a system of standard functional differential equations. In this way an existence and uniqueness theorem is proved for the original threshold model.
