\textit{J. B. Conrey, E. Fransen, R. Klein} and \textit{C. Scott} [J. Number Theory 56, 214-226 (1996; Zbl 0851.11028)] have given an asymptotic formula for the sum \[ \sum_{\overset{h=1}{(h,k)=1}}^k s(h,k)^{2m}, \] where \(s(h,k)\) is the classical Dedekind sum. This paper gives a sharper estimate for this sum in the case where \(m=1\) and \(k\) is a prime power. A similar result is given for the sum with summand \(s(h,k)/h\). In the case when \(k\) is a prime \(p\) the following striking results are obtained: \[ \sum^{p-1}_{h=1} s(h,p)^2=\frac{5}{144} p^2+O\Bigl(p\text{ exp}\bigl(\frac{3\log p}{\log\log p}\bigr)\Bigr), \] \[ \sum^{p-1}_{h=1}s(h,p)/h=\frac{\pi^2}{72} p+O(\sqrt{p}). \]
