A method for constructing wavelet bases on the unit sphere \(S^2\) of \(\mathbb R^3\) is presented. The underlying idea is to transfer planar wavelet bases to faces of a certain polyhedron, in particular triangular faces, and subsequently to \(S^2\) using radial projection. An inner product is associated to the convex polyhedron. By construction, distortions around the poles are avoided. The wavelets yield a stationary multiresolution analysis and both wavelets and scaling functions are compactly supported. Riesz stability of the wavelet bases is satisfied and fast algorithms with simple implementation are avalilable. Furthermore extensions to other closed surfaces are possible. A major drawback of this contruction is however the inherent lack of smoothness.
