In recent works the authors developed the concepts of asymptotic prime divisors, asymptotic sequences and asymptotic grade, showing they behave very similarly to, respectively, prime divisors, classical sequences and grade. Asymptotic sequences are of interest primarily because they give information concerning the minimal prime ideals in the completion of a local ring. The goal of this paper is to develop the analogous concepts of essential sequence, essential prime divisor, and essential grade, which will similarly give information concerning all the associated prime ideals in the completion of a local ring. - It is shown that this concepts, as the asymptotic theory, play a role analogous to prime divisor, R-sequence where R is a Noetherian ring, and grade in the standard theory.
