    The von Neumann-Jordan constant \(CN_{J}(X)\) of a Banach space \(X\) is defined by \[ \sup \{ \frac{\| x+y\| ^{2}+\| x-y\| ^{2}}{2(\| x\| ^{2}+\| y\| ^{2})}:x,y\in X,\;(x,y)\neq (0,0)\} \] and the James constant by \[ J(X)=\sup \{\min (\| x+y\| ,\| x-y\| :x,y\in S_{X}\}. \] The authors introduce the new constant \[ CN_{J}^{(p)}(X)=\sup \{ \frac{\| x+y\| ^{p}+\| x-y\| ^{p}}{2^{p-1}(\| x\| ^{2}+\| y\| ^{2})}:x,y\in X,\;(x,y)\neq (0,0)\} ,\;1\leq p<\infty , \] and show that \(CN_{J}^{(p)}(X)<2\) iff \(J(X)<2\) (in this case, \(X\) is known as a uniformly nonsquare Banach space). The relation between \(CN_{J}^{(p)}(X)\) and the normal structure of \(X\) is given, and the following formula is obtained in \(L_{r}[0,1]\) for \(p\in [ 1,2)\): \[ CN_{J}^{(p)}(L_{r}[0,1])=\begin{cases} 2^{2-p}, & 1\leq p<r, \\ 2^{\frac{p}{r}-p+1}, & r<p\leq \frac{r}{r-1}, \\ 1, & \frac{r}{r-1}<p<\infty. \end{cases} \]
