This paper is concerned with the stability of symmetric two-step methods applied to the scalar test equation \(y''= -w^2y\). At first the basic theory is described. Then a new eight-order \(P\)-stable method is constructed and the computational implementation is presented. Numerical and theoretical results obtained for several well-known problems show the efficiency of the new method.
