The authors propose general functional differential equations to describe the spread of a disease with latency in a heterogeneous host population. Assuming an identical natural mortality rate for all groups, and with a gamma distribution of the latency, they demonstrate the global threshold dynamics with regard to the basic reproduction number by applying some techniques such as the theory of non-negative matrices, persistence theory in dynamical systems and Lyapunov functions.
