The author shows that every orthomodular lattice (in particular, the projection lattice of a von Neumann algebra) can be embedded into its structure group with a lattice ordering, which determines the orthomodular lattice up to isomorphism. For a finite orthomodular lattice, this construction gives a new class of Garside groups. The embedding is a group-valued measure. It is known that non-trivial measures with values in commutative groups need not exist. However, here the structure group is non-commutative and admits an abundance of group-valued measures. The existence of completions is characterized by a generalized Archimedean property which simultaneously applies to the orthomodular lattice and its structure group.
