Let G be a linear noncompact connected real semisimple Lie group with Iwasawa decomposition \(G=KAN\), and \({\mathfrak g}\) its Lie algebra. Let U be the maximal unipotent subgroup of G opposite to N. For a nilpotent element \(A\in {\mathfrak g}\), \(A\neq 0\), there exists a subalgebra \({\mathfrak sl}_ 2\) with standard basis A,H,B. Using the adjoint representation of \({\mathfrak sl}_ 2\) on \({\mathfrak g}\) we can associate to A a connected unipotent subgroup \(U(1\cdot 5)_ A\) and its unitary character \(\chi\) (exp X)\(=\exp iQ(X,B)\), where Q is the Killing form on \({\mathfrak g}\). The representation \(\pi_{\chi}\) of G induced from \(\chi\) is called a generalized Gelfand-Graev representation associated to A. Let P be a parabolic subgroup of G, and \(\pi_{\sigma \nu}\) be the representation of the principal series of G associated to P. In the first part of the paper the author studies the space V of intertwining operators from \(\pi_{\sigma \nu}\) to \(\pi_{\chi}\). A theorem is proved which gives an estimate for dim V. In the second part some intertwining operators are constructed. For this purpose the Whittaker integrals are used. The author examines how far they can be extended as meromorphic functions of \(\nu\). Consideration in the second part is restricted to complex semisimple Lie groups. The author lists up the results of analytic continuation of Whittaker integrals for simple Lie groups of rank 2.
