The paper under review continues research on improvements of the Conley index theory for discrete-time dynamical systems initiated in the articles [\textit{J. Szybowski}, Topology Appl. 138, No. 1--3, 167--188 (2004; Zbl 1041.37006)] and in the authors' publication [Dyn. Syst. 31, No. 3, 280--292 (2016; Zbl 1378.37032)]. The notions of the M-equivalence, homology M-equivalence, strong M-equivalence, and strong homology M-equivalence over a base space are introduced. Using those notions the authors provide the definitions of the (strong) Conley and (strong) homology Conley indices over the phase space. The indices satisfy the Ważewski property as well as the continuation and multiplicativity properties. There are examples of isolated invariant sets which have the same strong homology Conley indices, but not the same strong homology Conley indices over the phase space and which have the same (strong) homology Conley indices over the phase space, but not the same (strong) Conley indices over the phase space.
