The main purpose of the paper is the explanation of the equivalence of two definitions of representablility of matroids, namely the classical one in terms of vector configurations and a more general definition in terms of retractions of certain buildings. The more general definition arises in the theory of Coxeter matroids [the authors, WP-matroids and thin Schubert cells on Tits systems, Adv. Math. 103, No. 2, 162-179 (1994; Zbl 0805.05013)]. Both concepts are generalized further by considering representations of matroids in semimodular lattices and Coxeter matroids in chamber systems. The authors announce their forthcoming book on the subject of Coxeter matroids.
