Let \(M (\phi,\xi,\eta, g)\) be an almost contact metric manifold, \(\dim M =m=2n +1\), and \(\phi (X,Y) = g (X,\phi Y)\). The first half of the paper consists of preparatory material, which is of interest in itself. In Section 3, some lemmas are given for a normal \(M\) and a proposition for \(\eta\)-Einstein normal \(M\). In Section 4, the properties of the expression \(Q\phi-\phi Q\) are studied, where \(Q\) is the Ricci operator, for a normal \(M\). In Section 5 it is proved that \(\eta\)-Einstein normal almost contact metric manifolds are invariant under a \(D\)-homothetic deformation. In Section 6, the \(\phi\)-sectional curvature is studied. Section 7 is devoted to study locally the \(\phi\)-symmetric three-dimensional normal \(M\). In Section 8, an example is given.
