Let \(D\) be the Banach space of bounded integer-valued functions on a set \(S\). Let \(\|\cdot\|\) be the sup norm and let \(K\subset D\). For \(f\in D\) let \(\Delta(f)\) denote the infimum of \(\| f-k\|\) for \(k\in K\) and let \(K_f:=\{k\in K\), \(k\leq f\}\). If \(K_f\not=\emptyset\), then define \(\overline{f}\in D\), \(\overline{f}(s)=\sup\{k(s)\), \(k\in K_f\}\). A representative given result is: if \(K\) satisfies the conditions i) \(k+p\in K\), for \(k\in K\) and \(p\) integer, and ii) for any subset \(K'\subset K\) of uniformly bounded functions, the pointwise supremum of the functions in \(K'\) belongs to \(K\), then \(\Delta(f)=\lceil \| f-\overline{f}\|/2\rceil\) and the function \(f'=\overline{f}+\Delta(f)\) is the maximal best approximation of \(f\) by elements of \(K\), where \(\lceil x\rceil\) is the smallest integer greater than or equal to \(x\). Moreover, the operator \(T(f)=f'\) is Lipschitzian.
