Various methods and tools are described for improving and maintaining the quality and reliability of engineering structures and processes. The mathematical topics are arranged for engineers concerned with the practical implementation of quality control and tools for ensuring high reliability. Attention is turned to apply the available knowledge in the most effective way. Moreover, the following case studies are presented: a) errors made in Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, and b) engineering failure with new technology due to the absence of quality control in an alternative energy project. The book is divided into the following fifteen chapters: 1. Product Assurance; 2. Quality Control; 3. Designing for Quality; 4. Service Assurance: A Case Study; 5. Man-Made Catastrophes are the Result of Wanting Service Assurance; 6. Reliability Assurance; 7. Reliability and Life Cycle Maintainability; 8. A Brief Introduction to Stochastic Thinking; 9. Sampling Methods; 10. Operating Characteristics Curves; 11. Experimental Design and Latin Squares; 12. Fundamentals of Statistical Quality Inspection; 13. Quality Control Charts by Variables; 14. Quality Control Charts by Attributes; 15. The Culture of Statistical Quality Control. References are given to the chapters, and an index is included. For readers, also without a mathematical background, the book provides the principles and basic methods of quality control and reliability assurance, where many practical examples are given.
