The paper describes a regularized continuum model for discrete breathers in one-dimensional anharmonic lattices with symmetric nearest-neighbor potentials. This model is obtained by applying the so-called staggering transformation to relative displacement, and then using the Padé approximation to deal with the envelope of discrete breathers. Stationary and moving breather solutions are derived by using a rotating wave approximation combined with multiple scale methods. Detailed numerical results illustrates the theory, and mainly clarifies the comparison between the discrete and the continuous model.
