For a natural number \(N\), define \(\Gamma_0^+(N)\) to be the group generated by the Hecke group \(\Gamma_0(N)\) and the Fricke involution \(W_N = \left(\begin{smallmatrix} 0 &-1 \\ N &0\end{smallmatrix}\right)\). The authors derive a valence formula for this group. Next, they extend a criterion of \textit{J. Sturm} [Lect. Notes Math. 1240, 275--280 (1987; Zbl 0615.10035)] for distinguishing meromorphic modular forms for this group having Fourier coefficients which are algebraic integers. Finally, they consider cuspidal Poincaré series for \(\Gamma_0^+(N)\) and investigate the problem of finding a basis consisting of these Poincaré series for the space of cusp forms on \(\Gamma_0^+(N)\). This question was raised by \textit{H. Iwaniec} [Topics in classical automorphic forms. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (1997; Zbl 0905.11023)] for the space of cusp forms for \(\Gamma_0(N)\).
