    The paper deals with a coupled system for elastic and viscoelastic waves in two distinct domains \(\Omega_1,\;\Omega_2\) connected through a common interface \(\gamma\) with \(\Gamma_i=\partial\Omega_i\setminus \gamma\) and \(\nu_i\) the unit outward normal vector of \(\partial\Omega_i,\;i=1,2\): \[ \begin{aligned} &y_{tt}-\Delta[y(t,x)+y_t(t,x)]=0\;\text{in}\;(0,\infty)\times \Omega_1,\quad y(t,x)=0\;\text{on}\;(0,\infty)\times \Gamma_1,\\ &z_{tt}-\Delta z(t,x)=0\;\text{in}\;(0,\infty)\times \Omega_2,\quad z(t,x)=0\;\text{on}\;(0,\infty)\times \Gamma_2,\\ &y(t,x)=z(t,x),\;\partial_{\nu_1}y(t,x)+\partial_{\nu_1}y_t(t,x)=-\partial_{\nu_2}z(t,x)\;\text{on}\;(0,\infty)\times \gamma,\\ &y(0,x)=y_0,\;y_t(0,x)=y_1,\;\text{in}\;\Omega_1,\quad z(0,x)=z_0,\;z_t(0,x)=z_1\;\text{in}\;\Omega_2. \end{aligned} \] The main result is the polynomial stability of the system in the form \[ \begin{aligned} &\|(y,z),(y_t,z_t)\|_\mathcal{H}\leq \frac C{\sqrt t}\|(y_0,z_0),(y_1,z_1)\|_{D(\mathcal{A})}; \;\mathcal{H}=H^1_0(\Omega)\times L^2(\Omega),\\ &D(\mathcal{A})=\{\left((y_1,z_1),(y_2,z_2)\right)\in \mathcal{H}|\;(y_2,z_2)\in H_0^1(\Omega),(\Delta(y_1+y_2),\Delta z_1)\in L^2(\Omega),\\ &\hskip 6cm \partial_{\nu_1}y_1+\partial_{\nu_1}y_2=-\partial_{\nu_2}z_1\;\text{on}\;\gamma\}. \end{aligned} \]
