For a metric space \(X\), let \(KX_*(X)\) denote its coarse \(K\)-homology groups and \(K_*(C^*(X))\) the \(K\)-theory groups of the Roe \(C^*\)-algebra of controlled propagation locally compact operators. These two coarse invariants are related by the assembly map \(\mu:KX_*(X)\to K_*(C^*(X))\). The coarse Baum-Connes conjecture claims that \(\mu\) is an isomorphism. It is known now that the conjecture is not true in general, although it holds in many important cases. The main result of the paper is the construction that associates to any bounded geometry metric space another metric space, which defines geometrically the group of obstructions to the conjecture. It is also shown that this obstruction vanishes for metric spaces of finite asymptotic dimension which implies the Baum-Connes conjecture for such spaces as first proven by \textit{G. Yu} [Ann. Math. 147, 325--355 (1998; Zbl 0911.19001)].
