Let G be an almost simple Chevalley-Demazure group scheme. For any commutative ring R with 1, let E(R) denote the subgroup of G(R) generated by all elementary unipotents (root elements). Here is an example of G of type \(A_{n-1}:\) \(G=SL_ n\), \(G(R)=SL_ nR\), and \(E(R)=E_ nR\). The main result describes all subgroups of G(R) which are normalized by E(R) provided that: G is not of type \(A_ 1\); R has no factor rings of two elements when G is of type \(B_ 2\) or \(G_ 2\); \(z\in 2Rz+Rz^ 2\) (resp. \(3Rz+Rz^ 3)\) for all z in R when G is of type \(B_ n\) or \(C_ n\) (resp. \(G_ 2)\). All these conditions are necessary for the standard description. Also it is shown that E(R) is a perfect characteristic subgroup in any larger subgroup of G(R).
