Stratifying systems were introduced by \textit{K. Erdmann} and \textit{C. Sáenz} [Commun. Algebra 31, No. 7, 3429-3446 (2003; Zbl 1030.16007)]. They give a method to produce standardly stratified algebras as endomorphism algebras. In the paper under review the authors show that the concept of a stratifying system generalizes the concept of standard modules for standardly stratifying algebras. This is applied to show that the determinant of the Cartan matrix of a standardly stratified algebra is not zero, and to give an alternative characterization of quasi-hereditary algebras via stratifying systems. Some interesting consequences for tilting modules are also obtained.
