Let \(G\) be a real reductive group, and let \(H\) be a closed subgroup of \(G\) which is reductive in \(G\). Following a previous paper of the first author and \textit{T. Oshima} [Adv. Math. 248, 921--944 (2013; Zbl 1317.22010)], one says that the pair \((G,H)\) has property (PP) if a minimal parabolic subgroup of \(G\times H\) has an open orbit in \((G\times H)/\mathrm{diag} H\). It is proved in [op. cit.] that \((G,H)\) has property (PP) if and only if the multiplicities for the branching law of the restriction of any admissible smooth representation of \(G\) to \(H\) have finiteness/boundedness property. In the paper under review, the authors give a complete classification of pairs \((G,H)\) with property (PP) such that \(H\) is a symmetric subgroup of \(G\). This lays a foundation for the further study of branching problems for pairs \((G,H)\) with property (PP).
