The singular two-point boundary value problem \(-\epsilon u''+p(x)u=f(u)\) is approximated by replacing the functions p and f with piecewise polynomials. The author proves a global bound uniform in \(\epsilon\) for the error in the solution to the approximate problem. For piecewise constants the solution of the approximate problem involves hyperbolic functions; for piecewise linear and quadratic functions higher transcendental functions are required. There are no numerical examples.
