This paper is the final report for the author's announcement of the same title, which appeared in Lect. Notes Math. 1090, 116-128 (1984; Zbl 0546.53034). It contains the results of the announcement, their detailed proofs and some further results, namely an investigation on the equivariance of symmetric submanifolds (Theorem 2.5) and the classification of totally complex totally geodesic symmetric submanifolds of compact quaternionic symmetric spaces (in sect. 5).
