Recently replacing or combining physical experiments by numerical ``computer'' experiments is made essentially in computational fluid dynamics. This increases the necessity of faster supercomputers based on multiprocessor architecture. This paper presents a general survey on the SUPRENUM hardware and software system created on the basis of grid or grid-like data structure. The aim of SUPRENUM project is to develop relatively optimal supercomputer architecture with distributed memory multiprocessor system with a medium granularity since the single node is a very powerful vector processor. The essential information for SUPRENUM includes the following topics: hardware, system software, application software - specially oriented to CFD models. For solving different research problems with the aid of supercomputers with grids and grid-like data structures, three types of grids are used: regular grids, block structured grids, irregular grids. On the other hand static, dynamic and adaptic grids are developed. The advantage of SUPRENUM system is that the balanced (``optimal'') load of communication (``computation'') among all nodes is made, employing the grid partitioning concept. Afterwards an advanced multigrid algorithms for operating on a given grid, can be used. Finally, this is a nice review on supercomputer development.
