The Dirichlet problem for a one-dimensional \(p\)-Laplacian is considered, namely \[ (| u'(x)|^{p-2}u'(x))'+\lambda | 1-u(x)| ^q=0,\quad -1<x<1\qquad x(-1)=x(1) =0\tag{1} \] with \(p>1,\) \(q>0\). Such problems arise from combustion problem and chemical catalysis theory. Problem (1) is studied by means of a time map method. For different values of \(\left( p,q\right) \) the authors give a complete classification of bifurcation diagrams of classical positive solutions on the \((\| u\| _\infty,\lambda ^{1/p}) \) plane in Theorem 2.1. Corollary 2.2 provides the exact multiplicity of classical solutions of (1) for different \(( \lambda ,p,q) \). The results are well illustrated by suitable figures. In the proofs of the main results some nontrivial calculations are performed which were checked with the aid of the computer software Mathematica 5.0.
