Let \(A\) be a finite product of at least two copies of \(\mathbb R\) or \(\mathbb C\). All discrete nonsolvable subgroups of SL\((2,A)\) containing an irreducible lattice in a maximal unipotent subgroup are classified. In particular, such a discrete subgroup has to be arithmetic. In the case when \(A\) is a product of \(\mathbb R\)'s, this is a result of Selberg.
