Let \(X\) be a Banach space and let \((C(t))_{t\in\mathbb{R}}\) be a strongly continuous cosine family with generator \(A\). Let \(S(t)\) be a related sine family. Denote \(\Psi_1=\{t>0: C(t)\text{ is demicompact}\}\) and \(\Psi_2=\{t>0: I-(tI-S(t))\text{ is demicompact}\}\). Let \(B\) be a compact operator in \(X\). By \(\tilde{C}\) and \(\tilde{S}\), denote the cosine- and sine-families generated by \(A+B\), respectively. Then \begin{itemize} \item if \(C(t)\) is demicompact for every \(t>0\), then \(\tilde{C}(t)\) is demicompact for every \(t>0\), \item if \(S(t)\) is demicompact for all \(t>0\), then \(\tilde{S}(t)\) is demicompact for all \(t>0\), \end{itemize} The same result is obtained for resolvents of \(A\) and \(A+B\). Suppose that \(C\) is uniformly continuous. Assume \(\delta'>0\) is such that for all \(t>\delta'\) there exists \(t_0\in(0,\delta_0)\) with \(I-C(t_0)C(t)\) being compact. Then the following statements are equivalent: \begin{itemize} \item \(I-A\) is demicompact \item \(\exists \delta>0\) s.t. \((0,\delta)\subset\Psi_1\) \item \(\Psi_1=(0,+\infty)\) \item \(\exists \theta>0\) s.t. \((0,\theta)\subset\Psi_2\) \item \(\lambda^2 R(\lambda^2,A)\) is demicompact for every \(\lambda>\omega\) \item \(\lambda^2 R(\lambda^2,A)\) is demicompact for some \(\lambda>\omega\) \end{itemize} Moreover, \(0\in\sigma_{uf}(A)\) iff \(1\in\sigma_{uf}(C(t))\) for some \(t>0\). Here, \(\sigma_{uf}\) is the upper-Fredholm spectrum.
