For an order bounded linear functional on a Riesz space \(E\), the null ideal \(N (f ) =\{x \in E : |f |(|x|) = 0\}\) is a uniformly closed order ideal. In this paper, the author studies the order properties of the quotient Riesz spaces of the form \(E/N (f )\). In particular, characterizations of discrete and continuous quotients of Riesz spaces are given. The relationship between properties of a Riesz space \(E\), its order dual \(E^\sim\) and properties of quotients \(E/N (f)\), where \(f\) runs over some subspaces of the order dual \(E^\sim\), is investigated. To this end, let \(E^\sim_B = \{f \in E^\sim: N (f ) \text{ is a proper band} \}\) and \(E^\sim_p = \{f \in E^\sim : N (f )\text{ is a proper ideal} \}\). Suppose that \(E\) is a Riesz space where \(F \subset E^\sim_B\) separates the points of \(E\). Then \(E\) is discrete (resp., continuous) if and only if \(E/N (f )\) is discrete (resp., continuous) for every \(f \in F \). A characterization of metrizable locally convex topological Riesz spaces whose quotients by every proper closed ideal are discrete is also given.
