The Melnikov method is known to be important in detecting transvers homoclinic orbits and homoclinic bifurcations for systems with small parameters. Unfortunately, the method strongly depends on a small parameter, which does not exist in most practical systems. Thus, the method is limited in dealing with strongly nonlinear systems. The paper presents a procedure to study sub-harmonic resonances of some strongly nonlinear systems by employing the homotopy analysis method which provides a way to extend Melnikov functions to such systems. The effectiveness of the procedure is demonstrated by an example which shows the agreement of the obtained theoretical results with numerial simulation.
