Important properties of Auslander orders over a complete discrete valuation domain are established in this paper. Roughly speaking, an Auslander order is an order \(\Lambda\) such that the category \(\text{pr\,}\Lambda\) of projective \(\Lambda\)-lattices is equivalent to a category of lattices over a (necessarily representation-finite) order. The author shows that this happens if and only if \(\text{pr\,}\Lambda\) is a \(\tau\)-category, i.e. a category with (generalized) almost split sequences. To analyse Auslander orders, he introduces a two-parameter homological condition which generalizes the \(k\)-Gorenstein condition. This leads to the criterion that an order \(\Lambda\) is an Auslander order if and only if its global dimension is at most 2, and \(\Lambda\) is Auslander-regular. This striking result opens a new perspective towards higher almost split sequences in comparison with homological conditions like Auslander regularity in arbitrary dimension. (Part of this program has already been pursued in Iyama's recent papers.) The main result completes the previous parts [for part I cf. Algebr. Represent. Theory 8, No. 3, 297-321 (2005; Zbl 1093.16015)] by a purely combinatorial criterion for a translation quiver to be an Auslander-Reiten quiver of a representation-finite order.
