A contact metric manifold \((M,\varphi,\xi,\eta,g)\) is called ``\(K\)-contact'' if its characteristic vector field \(\xi\) is a Killing field. It is known that a necessary and sufficient condition is that the Lie derivative satisfies \(L_\xi\phi=0\). Sasakian manifolds are \(K\)-contact but the converse fails in dimension greater than \(3\). The main goal of this paper is to introduce a general approach to left-invariant \(K\)-contact structures on Lie groups. In particular, a full classification is obtained in dimension \(5\).
